Item# 4411
Lloyd Ruby was a rookie at the
Brickyard® in 1960. Car owner J.C. Agajanian and crew chief
Frank McGurk provided Ruby with a brand new candy-apple red
Watson Roadster. Cold and rainy weather limited practice time
during most of the month of May. Ruby was the first rookie to
qualify on the first Saturday of time trials at 144.208 mph to
gain the 12th starting position. After qualifying,
Ruby's car was trimmed with yellow to make it easier for the
crew to spot him during the race.
In the race, Ruby moved up into
10th on Lap 130. While running in 6th on
Lap 143, during what should have been his final stop, his crew
failed to fully refuel his car car. Neither he nor his crew
realized that the car did not have enough fuel to go the
distance. With less than ten laps to go, Ruby passed an ailing
Johnny Thomson for 3rd place. Then Ruby realized
that his car
was out of fuel. He was forced to make an extra stop for fuel
on Lap 193. When he came into his pit, his crew proceeded to do
an unnecessary three-tire change as well as provide him with
the splash of fuel he needed. During the stop, the car stalled
from fuel starvation and had to be restarted. This disastrous
final stop dropped Ruby to 7th. Most of the crowd's
attention went to the terrific "trophy dash" between
winner Jim Rathmann and 2nd placed Rodger Ward. Jim
Rathmann won the 1960 Indianapolis 500® at a new record speed
of 138.767 mph. The #98 Watson Roadster was kept by Agajanian
and driven by Parnelli Jones for the next four years, winning
the 1963 Indianapolis 500®.
